26 Feb task #6 in Krabi

“Order food that you don’t know from a menu in a language you can’t speak.”
Now this was an easy (and very welcome) task. Most of my food experiences in Thailand so far have been like this: point at something on the menu and say “not spicy”. 😉
So, let me tell you about what I had for dinner today. 🙂
Appetizer:

As an appetizer I had a dumpling – one of those you can pretty much but anywhere. The problem with these is that you don’t quite know what to expect as its usually not obvious what they’re filled with. (maybe to other people it’s obvious but I have yet to find out how to decipher the dumpling code…) this one turned out to be sweet, filled with some kind of yellow custard. So maybe I should’ve actually saved that one for desert. Oh well… next time!
Main course:

As I was walking past the different food stands of the local night market I had a tough time finding menus that were not translated into English. It is quite apparent that there are a lot of tourists here who, unfortunately, also like to explore the different food options at the market. When I came across this food stand, with two ladies working there I decided to just go for it. I looked at them, smiled and just said “nèung” (=one). First I was met with a confused look but then she smiled back at me and said “40 Baht”. My main course ended up being chicken, rice (spicy!!!), chicken broth and a little bit of salad. It was good – not overly different from anything I’ve tried so far. But it’s the experience that counts, right?! 😉
Drink:

As a drink I ended up getting something rather weird. When I walked past this food stand they were just preparing one of the drinks. I had no clue what it was and stopped to watch what they were doing. The guy (probably the son of the owner) asked me if I wanted to try – so I did. “Yes, one please.” It turns out that it was a combination of jelly (in the form of noodles), coconut, syrup and crashed ice. It was different, weird but good at the same time. And way to sweet. 😉
Ah food in Thailand… There’s still so much more to try!!
